Ripple Why you Work

Fourier Waves

  • Explain qualitatively how sines and cosines add up to produce arbitrary periodic functions.
  • Recognize that each Fourier component corresponds to a sinusoidal wave with a different wavelength or period.
  • Mentally map simple functions between Fourier space and real space.
  • Describe sounds in terms of sinusoidal waves.
  • Describe the difference between waves in space and waves in time.

Hope you feel better soon.

Waves on a String

http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/wave-on-a-string

Prnt the worksheet here

Go through the reading   http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/waves/u10l1a.cfm (there are actually 7 screens that cover Lesson 1 and 2)

Draw a wave and its parts

Summarize what you have done.

Types of Scales

Tell me how scales work, and how it is related, or NOT related, to Hooke's Law.  A quick search on Google Images shows me scales of justice, dial scales, doctor scales, fishing scales and digital scales.  Pick 3 of these.  Show me for each....a) how it works b) how it is/is not related to the material covered thus far and c) how accurate you believe it to be and why.

Good luck

The Math of Hooke's Law and the Pendulum

http://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/energy/u5l1b.cfm

You need to copy the formulas into your front cover and then complete the worksheet. Each problem MUST have a drawing, variables circled, and a formula /work to receive credit.

Worksheet

Pendulum Problem

1) what variables affect the period of a pendulum? Explain how you know this from your lab.

2) design a pendulum that has a period of exactly one second on Earth, and one second on the Moon. To do this, you will need to find the formula for a pendulum and create a drawing, variable set, and formula work.

Intro to Waves

Please read:

http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/waves/u10l0a.cfm

When you get done, give me a top five points for each page.  This should take 15-30 minutes.
