Curriculum for Physics of Waves

Benchmark: Sci.PhysW.01: Students will use inquiry to synthesize Hooke's Law, including potential and kinetic energy considerations and periodic wave factors.
Component: Sci.PhysW.01.01: Compute the period and mass of objects attached to a spring.
Component: Sci.PhysW.01.02: Experimentally determine the spring constant of various springs.
Component: Sci.PhysW.01.03: Use the equations for kinetic energy and potential energy to determine energy conservation in a spring system.
Component: Sci.PhysW.01.04: Determine the work done in a spring system. Compare work to energy considerations using the Work-Energy theorem.
Benchmark: Sci.PhysW.02: Students will classify the different wave types by their wave form, energy transfer mechanisms, and specific applications.
Component: Sci.PhysW.02.01: Compare and contrast transverse, longitudinal and combination waves.
Component: Sci.PhysW.02.02: Evaluate light, sound, and matter waves in terms of speed, transmission in various media, and real-world applications.

Component: Sci.PhysW.03.01: Investigate and analyze a variety of wavelengths, energies, and frequencies of specific colors in the visible spectrum.
Component: Sci.PhysW.03.02: Combine the primary colors of light, and mix light to form a variety of colors and colored shadows. Analyze using the conceptions of absorption and reflection.
Component: Sci.PhysW.03.03: Discuss the effect of relativity and the Einsteinian view of the constant speed of light.
Benchmark: Sci.PhysW.04: Using inquiry, students will synthesize various aspects of sound, including closed and open tubes, and the use of intensity vs. frequency curves in hearing applications. Students will determine the speed of sound in various media, using objects that are moving and / or stationary.
Component: Sci.PhysW.04.01: Determine the speed of sound in various media.
Component: Sci.PhysW.04.02: Experimentally determine and calculate various wavelengths in closed and open tubes using the principle of resonance. Observe relationships between frequency and pitch.
Component: Sci.PhysW.04.03: Research the relationship between Decibel level and hearing loss. Analyze Doppler levels of a variety of sounds, and determine the relationship between distance and intensity.
Component: Sci.PhysW.04.04: Using experimentation and/or calculation, determine the Doppler effect on the frequency of various sounds.
Benchmark: Sci.PhysW.05: Experiment and apply reflection and refraction phenomena to real-world situations of optics and mirrors.
Component: Sci.PhysW.05.01: Experimentally determine the value of n for various media using Snell's law of refraction.
Component: Sci.PhysW.05.02: Create reflection diagrams for plane, concave and convex mirrors.
Component: Sci.PhysW.05.03: Create refraction diagrams for a variety of lenses, including double concave and double convex lenses.
